![]() You have the ability to put something into the Internet as well, positive or negative, or your creations, or try new things and create designs or whatever to be criticized online. Overnight it can happen, people can automatically comment, they can automatically cut you down or lift you up. Why did you decide to make it more than just Jem's story in that way? Chu: I definitely feel like we were telling the story of a new generation of kids who are growing up with instant fame, or can have instant fame whether it's in their high school or in their town or in the world. But here you shone a light on the positive ways a figure like Jem can affect her fans. IGN: I felt the movie was really optimistic, especially about the use of social media, because obviously we know there is a dark side to Instagram and Twitter and YouTube culture. As a coming of age story, it only accelerates all those things that you feel, all the anxiety and struggles that you go through to figure out who you are. In terms of watching him and being with him during this crazy time of his life where people wanted things all over, his public persona, his personal persona, what he is with his mother, what he is with his friends, it definitely had an impact on me myself - I wouldn't say necessarily Jem the movie - but it definitely made me appreciate that we don't all have to go through that, because it is hard. ![]() When I got the opportunity to use YouTube videos in a similar way we used with Justin, I thought it was really powerful. ![]() So when we were talking about reinventing Jem, in the same way that the '80s Jem used MTV and music videos to tell its story and would pop into videos, we wanted that equivalent. I thought it was such a powerful tool to have the Internet as a character in a movie. I think the tools we use to inspect his story definitely made me think that there was a great way to tell stories in that way, which is with YouTube videos and comments and with fan videos. How did your time with Justin Bieber and seeing his journey to fame inform this movie? Chu: It was not inspired by him necessarily. IGN: This movie felt very inspired by your experience doing Never Say Never.
